Meet our new monthly fashion columnist, Carolyn Arentson.

Originally from Carroll, Iowa, and now calling Dubuque home, the 25-year-old uses her background in modeling, styling and photography to create an online destination for women to get chic inspiration for their style and life.

Carolyn launched her blog, mychicobsession.com, three years ago, with and eye toward making the most of your wardrobe, wearing pieces in new ways and putting together timeless looks (with a little bit of flair).

“It’s my goal to help readers walk away feeling inspired with the potential found right within their closet,” she said.

In her first column, she offers six spring fashion tips that will find life well beyond the season.

Trends are fun to shop for when you’re refreshing your wardrobe for spring, but you want to make sure you have the pieces that can be mixed and matched and worn in different ways. Not only will you nail classic spring style, but you’ll also have limitless outfit possibilities all season long.

1. White sneakers

Such a huge win when you don’t have to wear winter boots all the time, right? White sneakers are not only comfy and versatile, but they’re also great at dressing down fancier looks. This allows you to wear more of your dressier items for day time.

2. Floral dress

Nothing rings in spring better than some pretty florals (and gingham, might I add). A floral dress is a huge staple because it can be worn with strappy heels for a night out, sneakers for errands on the weekend, or slides for brunch with friends.

3. Light jacket

Spring weather can be hot and cold (way better than all cold, though), so switch out those puffer jackets and faux fur coats for a light jacket. Here are some great options: Denim jacket, anorak/utility jacket, motorcycle jacket, trench coat and/or a cardigan. It might sound like a lot, but getting all of them is not a bad idea. They each have their separate uses, and I think you’d be surprised by how much you’ll wear them all.

4. Lightweight sweater

A cozy, yet breathable, knit pairs well with a great pair of jeans or layers nicely over an easy floral dress. Layering always adds interest and style, so throw on one of your light jackets over the sweater and you’ve got a complete, stylish look.

5. Kimono

Kimonos make adding style to your outfit so easy. There’s a print and color for everyone, and they instantly elevate your ensemble. A kimono looks cute and casual when thrown over a tank and paired with denim shorts and it can be just the right amount of coverage you need for dressier events, too.

6. White jeans

Spring isn’t exactly “shorts every day” weather, so make sure you pick up a pair of denim. But not just any denim: White denim. It’s so fresh and lightens up your look. It looks so pretty paired with pastels, too.
