Nutrition: Mindful holiday eating

This time of year can stir up a range of emotions around food, particularly feelings of anxiety.

When working with clients during the holiday season, I often notice the stress and planning they feel they need to engage in for get-togethers.

My advice? Relax and practice mindfulness.

This suggestion can be challenging to accept. No plan for what to eat? You’re giving me free rein to choose what I want? When we discard the “rules” we think we need to follow, panic can set in. Many of us struggle to trust ourselves to enjoy what we eat while prioritizing our health.

With food taking center stage during the holidays, let’s explore some ways to reduce stress and enhance enjoyment during this special time.

Eat mindfully

Pay attention to your eating habits at gatherings. Are you snacking simply because food is available, or are you truly hungry and savoring what you eat? Often, we don’t fully taste or experience our food because we’re focused on socializing or mindlessly snacking. Engage with your meals: What flavors can you identify? What’s the texture like?

Reduce stress

The holidays can be particularly stressful, whether due to family gatherings or a packed schedule. Stress eating is common during this time. While it’s true that certain foods can provide short-term comfort, relying on them throughout the season can lead to negative long-term effects. Consider having some stress management techniques ready to ground yourself before meals, allowing you to approach eating with a more peaceful mindset. You might be surprised at how much this can enhance your eating experience.

Indulge

Enjoy your favorite holiday treats. Many of these delicacies are available only this time of year, and a few treats won’t ruin your health. The challenge arises when we indulge constantly and feel out of control. By consciously choosing to enjoy treats you truly appreciate, you’ll find it easier to select healthier options alongside your indulgences.

Food should not detract from your enjoyment of the holiday season. It should enhance it. Food is pleasure. Food fosters community. Sometimes, all we need to do is bring a little awareness to our habits, shift our mindset and relax to fully embrace this wonderful time of year.
